Technical Architecture

The eSIM ecosystem operates on a three-tier architecture defined by GSMA SGP.22: the eUICC (embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card) in the device, the SM-DP+ (Subscription Manager Data Preparation Plus) server operated by carriers, and the LPA (Local Profile Assistant) software in the device OS.

eUICC

Hardware security element. Stores encrypted carrier profiles. GSMA-certified tamper-resistant chip.

SM-DP+

Carrier's remote provisioning server. Generates, encrypts, and delivers profile packages to devices.

LPA

Device-side software managing profile download, installation, and switching. Built into iOS and Android.

// FAQ_DATABASE

European carriers primarily use 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 2600 MHz for 4G LTE. 5G NR deployments use 700 MHz (n28), 3.5 GHz (n78), and 26 GHz (n258) bands. eSIM profiles configure the device to use all bands supported by the carrier.

EU Regulation 531/2012 (as amended) mandates that carriers cannot charge retail roaming surcharges within the EEA. This applies to the carrier whose profile you are using. An EU-based carrier's eSIM plan will include EEA roaming; non-EU carrier plans may not.

No. GSMA SGP.22 explicitly prohibits profile cloning. Each profile is cryptographically bound to the specific eUICC it was installed on. Profile transfer requires carrier-authorised re-provisioning through the SM-DP+ server.
